Stone from Brač quarries has been mined since the Ancient Greek and Roman times and stone used for the construction of important buildings. The most famous of these that are located in the vicinity are Diocletian's Imperial Palace in Split, the Cathedral of St James in Sibenik and the Cathedral of St Lawrence in Trogir which have been under World Heritage (UNESCO) protection.
Stone of world famous whiteness and quality was also built into many famous buildings. It was used in construction of some parts of the White House in Washington, Parliament in Vienna, Governor's Palace in Trieste, part of the Budapest Parliament and many other buildings. It is a silent testimony of primordial human need for creating and often chosen by sculptors both self-taught and academic like Juraj Dalmatinac, Andrija Alesi and Nikola Firentinac.
